
The “A” in the ICUCARE® Framework—Assess, Activate, and Build on Prior Knowledge—reminds us that meaningful math learning begins with students’ ideas. This session examines why traditional assessments that focus on answers fall short and explores practices that reveal and build on student thinking.
Dr. Pamela Seda is the Founder/CEO of Seda Educational Consulting, LLC. She has over 30 years of educational experience and currently lives in metro Atlanta. Dr. Seda received a Bachelor’s degree in Math Education from the University of South Florida, a Master’s degree in Math Education from Georgia State University, and a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Math Education from Georgia State University. She also earned a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from the University of West Georgia.
Dr. Seda is co-author of the book, Choosing to See: A Framework for Equity in the Math Classroom. In this book, she weaves together educational research, personal and professional stories, and practical examples of how to implement the ICUCARE® equity framework that came out of her dissertation research.
The ICUCARE® Equity Framework, developed by Dr. Pamela Seda and featured in Choosing to See (2021), is a seven-principle, research-based approach designed to help educators foster equitable math classrooms. It shifts from teacher-centered instruction to empowering student-centered sensemaking, focusing on affirming marginalized learners and dismantling deficit views.
