Samuel Moreida Rey, a senior from Placentia, CA, embodies perseverance, passion, and a commitment to making the world a better place. His journey has been shaped by personal challenges and transformative experiences, from recovering from a traumatic head injury in fourth grade to excelling in a rigorous academic environment. “The injury was a turning point,” Samuel reflects. “It sparked my interest in the medical field and taught me that while luck can play a role in life, we can position ourselves to make the most of it.”
Samuel’s academic path began to shift in seventh grade when he enrolled at Oxford Academy. The demanding curriculum and long daily commutes tested his discipline and resilience. “I struggled with failure at first, but those challenges helped me grow,” he recalls. Over time, he became a leader among his peers, balancing a heavy workload with his role in Smiles Brought To You, a tutoring initiative supporting Hispanic students from low-income families.
Mathematics quickly became a cornerstone of Samuel’s success. “I’ve always had a passion for math, and seeing my hard work pay off brings me joy,” he shares. For Samuel, math isn’t just a subject; it’s a gateway to solving real-world problems. He plans to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, driven by a vision to create life-changing medical technologies. “With so much destruction in the world, I want to build something that puts it back together,” Samuel explains.
Samuel’s teacher, Eric Huang, has been impressed by his determination. “He balances academics, varsity water polo, and leadership responsibilities with ease,” says Mr. Huang. “Samuel’s work ethic and collaboration in class make him a strong candidate for the Math Medic Foundation scholarship.”
Receiving the Math Medic Foundation scholarship is a meaningful milestone for Samuel. “It validates my journey and strengthens my belief in my goals,” he says. Your support for Math Medic Foundation’s Giving Tuesday campaign can help students like Samuel continue their educational journeys and make meaningful contributions to the world. With your help, Samuel can turn his passion for mathematics and engineering into innovations that heal and inspire.

Math Medic Foundation (MMF) has selected 5 deserving students to help send to college! The Foundation received many applications and these 5 stood out for their determination, work ethic, and desire to make an impact on the world. These students will pursue mathematics and help balance the scales in a field that is still largely homogeneous. But they need our help - each of their families has experienced hardship and will not be able to afford college without taking on substantial student loans. We at MMF have committed a base scholarship of $2,000 to each student, but we want to do more. Here is where you come in!
We’re going to split all proceeds from this campaign equally among these 5 students! If we raise $10,000, their scholarship will increase from $2,000 to $4,000 each. If we raise $20,000, their scholarship will increase to $6,000, and so on. Help us give these students a truly life-altering award!
Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Component: You also have the option to fundraise by sending a unique link to your friends and family. Fundraisers who raise $150 OR MORE from now until Giving Tuesday (12/3/24) will receive a 10 oz stackable YETI mug. *Gifts will be sent out in January 2025*
